Stevensville resident Heidi Schnarr has a heart for felines and is starting "Heidi's Kittens," a nonprofit, to help rescue them.
“What’s great about cats is they are really sweet and cuddly,” Schnarr said.
This summer she has transported 130 kittens and pregnant cats out of Utah to prevent them from being euthanized. Schnarr takes them to rescue facilities, fosters them to willing helpers and currently has a house full of fluffy fun.
Schnarr had been fostering kittens for local shelters including Animeals, Bitter Root Humane Association, Pandas and Western Montana Humane Society for over two years when she joined Facebook pages that asked for help transporting animals. She learned about how desperate the shelters are south of Montana.
“I was told that some of the southern shelters are accepting 500 to 1,000 animals per day and they have no space so animals are being euthanized by the hundreds and thousands,” Schnarr said. “I learned that the shelters in Utah are so full, especially right now with kittens, and so are the local rescue [centers] so they were saying they were going to need to start euthanizing.”
